Apiary locations are
harder and harder for a beekeeper to find, as open land is
swallowed up by development. Depending upon available forage, each
apiary is limited to 20-30
hives, so "beeks" have to
make arrangements with several landowners.
Traditionally, beekeepers pay their "yard rent" with a
couple gallons of honey or with special arrangements for
pollination sets. Additional consideration is offered to hosts
willing to provide temporary holding yards for larger colony
numbers, for either pre-pollination shipment or over-wintering.
If
you have rural property within 30 miles of Portland, and would
like to hear more about hosting one of our out yards beginning in
March 2008
or in upcoming years, please let us know!
