We're often asked about our favorite beekeeping and gardening books & magazines, so we decided to create an Amazon.com portal through our site. Proceeds from our arrangement with Amazon.com will allow us to continue free swarm rescue in the Portland Metropolitan area between April and July.

Bee Culture: The Magazine of American Beekeeping, is our favorite beekeeping periodical. Aimed at hobbyist, sideliner and commercial apiarists, this publication contains updated news on bee health, legislation, queen breeding and hive management.

The American Bee Journal is another excellent addition to your subscription list. The American Bee Journal was established in 1861 by Samuel Wagner and has been published continuously since that time except for a brief period during the Civil War. The Journal has the honor of being the oldest English language beekeeping publication in the world. Readership is concentrated among hobby and commercial beekeepers, bee supply dealers, queen breeders, package-bee shippers, honey packers, and entomologists.

Michelle absolutely loves this book. It explains our own philosophies in regard to food awareness and self-sufficiency.

Kingsolver and family describe their views on American food culture, and commit to living for one year on food produced close to their Virginia home. The recipes are fantastic, and the excerpts about energy and open markets are illuminating--and without political polarization.

Our home gardens exploded this year without any pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers or obsessive weeding, thanks to Mel's tips on soil mixes and intensive plantings.

Of course, the bees we keep at home did their part, too!

We highly recommend following Mel's advice on integrating several different types of compost. In our own beds, we included vermicompost from our worm composting bins. The stuff's magic.

The name says it all. Good starter tips for beekeepers.

L. L. Langstroth is the inventor of the modern hive, and his book has long been considered one of the best books on modern beekeeping. Definitely a must for any serious beekeeper's library.

Another must-have guide to beekeeping, containing hundreds of pages of wisdom. While the older editions are beautiful and still worth their price, we recommend finding the most recent edition of this volume.

The Hive & The Honey Bee by Dadant & Sons is perhaps "The Beekeeper's Bible". This book continues in the tradition of L. L. Langstroth's own writings, listed above.

Backyard Beekeeping is a favorite among hobbyists, with excellent photos and instructions. What is it with the lack of cover photos here?

Orchard Mason Bees are fun to raise, and are important beneficial pollinators for the home gardener and professional grower alike. This book was recommended to us by a fellow beekeeper who also raises these interesting insects.

We're considering a foray into the Orchard Mason Bee ourselves, but first things first...
